Getting Sydney - Day 8

Today our friends got to visit the orphanage that Miata came from and our guide went with them. Their older daughter stayed behind and played with my girls and we just had a relaxing day at the hotel. I am so surprised at how relaxing this trip has been. We've really had a lot of time to get to know Sydney and interact with her. It's amazing how much she has progressed physically in the few short days that we've had her.

She is getting more vocal about the things she doesn't like, but she is still such a sweet-natured child. My girls get upset when she pitches a fit because she was so good the first couple of days...now they think she's being a brat anytime she cries. We've explained to them that she can't understand us and that is the only language she knows. We've decided not to try to correct her or fuss at her at all until we've been home for a week or two. That may not be possible if she gets into something dangerous or gets into the habit of hitting or something like that, but so far we haven't had to deal with that.

She has the cutest little wail. She hates being wiped when her diaper is being changed and now as soon as Ginger picks up a wipe she starts crying. She cries a soft little hoarse cry as long and she is being wiped, and then she zips up her mouth as soon as Ginger zips up her little outfit. She still cries when we lay her down for nap or at night, but Ginger just sings softly and her crying doesn't last too long.

She can open just about anything with those little fingers. If she has trouble opening a package of something, she even knows how to use her teeth to start the 1st tear. She also stands on her tip-toes a lot. Ginger thinks she was probably in a walker a lot and that's the way her feet touched the floor. At this rate she's going to have really nice calves!

We started out the day with a little lovin':

YAAWWNN!!!

After breakfast we went down to the pool and let the girls play with Kasity while her parents visited Miata's orphanage. These girls have really enjoyed being together. The Lord is so good to know exactly what we need, and then to provide that for us! Sorry, Beverly, but the girls haven't written to you yet. They've had a break from school this week and they are reveling in it! (We are web-journaling instead.)

And here I am keeping a watchful eye on them.

Then we came back up to the room and Sydney ran around like a mad woman. She is very active in the morning and loves to toddle around. After all that work a girl needs her beauty rest! (Thanks for this outfit Beverly...it looks very cute on her.)

While she was sleeping we took advantage of the quiet time to grab a bite of lunch. We made the mistake of not bringing any bread with us and so far we can't find any. I went down to the lobby and found a bakery and bought a couple of loaves of French bread. Ginger cut them into tiny slices and made PBJ's. We brought lots of food from home, so usually we eat breakfast at the hotel, and a lunch of either tunafish (or chicken salad) with crackers, or PBJ sandwiches. For supper we've done different things: Chinese, KFC, McDonalds, or Pizza Hut. I'm so thankful that no one in our family has been ill so far on this trip.

Here's Sydney thawing out from her nap.

Right after lunch, Sydney "does her business" in this leaning forward stance. Here she is in poop position...you can't see it, but her face is red. She was making those cute little grunting noises too.

In the afternoon (while the room was airing out) we went to the Friendship store and bought some goodies. Sydney latched onto a package of pencils and did not let go of it even for the lady to scan...she had to read the barcode while Sydney was trying to protect them from her.

The Friendship Store is like a department store, and the prices are what you'd expect in a store in the States...if not higher. The only thing that you can get really good deals on are DVD's and CD's, but the DVD's will not play in your players at home because they will only play in DVD players bought in China.

We passed through the lobby of the hotel that we're going to be staying in tomorrow, and I couldn't resist this picture:

Once again we embraced the Chinese culture and ate at a foreign restaurant:

The above picture is looking left. Standing in the same spot and looking slightly to the right we see this:

On the way home from Pizza Hut the sun peeked out...the first time we've seen her face since we've been in Guangzhou (not the we're complaining...it got very hot very fast as soon as the sun started shining on us.)

This doesn't really do it justice, but here's a shot of evening traffic on the street outside our hotel. It doesn't appear as if there is any rhyme or reason to the traffic laws, but I'm sure there is. The bicycles, mopeds, and motorcycles weave in and out of traffic and appear to be in constant danger of getting run over (which is probably the case.) Cars don't stop for pedestrians so you have to be very careful crossing the street.

Back up in our room we are packing up to move to the Garden Hotel. Ginger and Sydney are looking out over her native country

We're not sure, but we think this may be the same mountain range that we saw in her referral picture. If so, her orphanage would be on the other side of these mountains

Sydney loves to look out of windows. Here she is looking down on Guangzhou, China.

A little more play before the end of the day

She doesn't know how to crawl yet. Ginger is working with her to try to teach her and here is one of her first attempts

Ahhh...sweet rewards

Cute little laugh
